After Clodion, L’enfance de Silène, Late 1800s, Bronze

About This Piece

Bronze group with brown patina, entitled "L'enfance de Silène", signed Clodion and annotated Cresson Éditeur on the terrace. Claude Michel (1738-1814), known as Clodion, was a sculptor from Lorraine, a pupil of Jean-Baptiste Pigalle, who was known to have received numerous awards for his mythological and allegorical work.
"The Childhood of Silenus" depicts a young satyr in human form, his pan flute slung over his shoulder, accompanied by a bacchante and two children, all dressed in drapery and animal skins. They dance, play the tambourine and wander around in a joyful atmosphere.
This group is fixed on a base of Italian cherry marble with a molded and beaded edge.
The whole rests on an oval base with a mahogany throat.
