Burmese Artist, Buddha Mandalay Sculpture, 1890s, Gilded Wood

About This Piece

Standing Buddha, carved in solid wood on a lotiform base, Burma (Myanmar), Mandalay period, late 19th / early 20th century. The posture is natural, and the serene face reveals a slight smile. The eyes are made of glass for the sake of realism. The wood is lacquered and gilded, richly decorated with glass inclusions. The Awakened One holds his monastic robe (uttarasanga) in his left hand. In his right hand, he holds the fruit of the myrobolan tree, an allusion to Buddha's healing power. Provenance: Estate of dealer and collector Claude de Marteau. This Burmese piece, acquired in 1972 in Thailand by Claude de Marteau, still bears the sealed label stating "The Department of Fine Arts has granted permission to leave the Kingdom under license number 585/ 2515" (Buddhist calendar 2515 = year 1972). We have a very limited number of these pieces. They come from the former stock of his store in rue de la Régence and Sablon in Brussels, then frozen in his attic for almost 50 years. Sold with certificate of provenance. Few marks of normal wear, very small loss at the bottom of her dress, under her left hand. Total H 62 cm x W 25 cm X D 9 cm H excluding base 53 cm
