Chinese export porcelain is a category of porcelain produced in China primarily for the foreign market, especially to Europe and North America, from the 16th to the 20th century. This type of porcelain has roots dating back to the Tang Dynasty, although significant production began in the Ming Dynasty. During the Ming period, blue and white porcelain, known as Kraak, became popular thanks to Portuguese and Dutch traders. These objects were highly appreciated in Europe and were often enriched with precious metal settings. with the advent of the Qing dynasty, the production of porcelain for export grew further, introducing new decorative techniques such as famille verte and famille rose. In the 18th century, Chinese export porcelain included items such as tea sets, figurines, and decorative plates. Some of the most popular decorative motifs included European scenes, Chinese landscapes, and nature-inspired designs. Porcelain decorated in Canton was particularly noted for its detailed and colorful patterns. Another significant aspect of Chinese export porcelain from this period is the depiction of European noble blazons and coats of arms, which were often commissioned by aristocratic families to decorate plates, vases, and other objects. Even as Europe began to develop its own porcelain manufactures, demand for Chinese porcelain remained strong. Towards the end of the 18th century, porcelain production in Jingdezhen, a major center for porcelain production, continued to meet the needs of the foreign market. In the 19th century, despite growing European competition, China continued to export large quantities of porcelain. Decorative objects such as vases, plates and figures remained very popular. Even today, Chinese export porcelain is highly prized in the international art market, with auctions fetching considerable sums.
