About This Piece

A soothing mid-century modernist style abstract landscape composition, executed in oil onto board and dated 1956. The scene depicts a landscape setting with vast golden fields stretching into the distance and small village buildings in the background. All realistic details have been omitted as the artist has captured the essence of the landscape without intricate detail and instead by its simplified forms. The structure of the landscape has been deconstructed into large, flat shapes, giving the painting an almost geometric feel that enhances its abstract quality. The colour palette consists of soft, muted tones—such as shades of yellow, blue and grey. These colors evoke a calm, quiet atmosphere. The brushstrokes are broad and textured, with a mix of thick and thin applications, adding depth and a light tactile quality. This oil on board is housed in a well-suited hessian-lined frame.
