About This Piece

Juan Alfonso Abril (active in the 17th century in Valladolid, Spain) Head of Saint Paul Oil on canvas, without frame cm. 48.5 x 62 – with frame cm. 63 x 76.5 Frame in shaped, ebonized wood and gilded parts. In the foreground, flanked by the sword with which it was cut off, we find the head of Saint Paul, the apostle who was martyred by beheading in Rome. The composition, played on a close-up and dialogic vision with the viewer, and the iconographic choice of representing the face with exhaling parted lips were elements that led to attributing the work to the hand of Juan Alfonso Abril, a painter active in the 17th century in Valladolid. The painting comes from the Luigi Koelliker Collection.
