Saint-Hubert, Early 20th Century, Sculpture in Oak

About This Piece

Carved oak representation of Saint Hubert, patron saint of hunters and foresters, dating from the early 20th century. The legend tells that Lord Hubert, hunting on a Good Friday, found himself facing a stag that had a luminous cross between its horns, and that made his dogs lie down: a voice reproached him for hunting on a holy day, and for devoting himself so much to this passion that he forgot his duties. The holy man is represented here in hunting clothes, wearing a hat and a hood, with boots. Typical accessories complement his outfit, including a pibole and a gibecière. Standing on a tree trunk, he also has his crossbow at his feet. The man contemplates the animal, and flatters the neck of the deer which carries a cross between its horns, a reminder of the myth.
