Keishi (Kyoto) is a beautiful color woodblock print on paper, a plate depicting a view of the Japanese capital, from the series Fifty-three Stations Along the Tokaido, published by Tsutaya Kichizo around 1855. This plate, as well all the plates of that print suite, was designed by the ukiyo-e old master, Utagawa Hiroshige (歌川 広重, 1797-1858) in 1833-34, after his travel along the Tokaido in 1832. A horizontal oban in quite good condition, except for visible pictorial retouchings on the lower margin and signs of restorations on the back, paper wrinkles, a widespread foxings and discoloration, Although its conditions, this original print preserves its beauty and charme, showing still today the talented touch of Hiroshige. We could admire a view of Tokyo,a landscape animated by workers, and above all how the capital was seen by one of the greater ukiyo-e master in XIX century Provenance: German private collection, assembled between the 1950s and 2000. Created after Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji series, this print series established this new major theme of ukiyo-e, the landscape print, or fūkei-ga, with a special focus on "famous views" (meisho). Hiroshige's series met a full success, not only in Japan, but later in Western countries.
